Description
Windows 11 Pro is the edition of Windows 11 that adds encryption, virtualisation and management features to the Home edition. The product is an activation key for one PC, with no subscription.
According to Microsoft, BitLocker To Go (encryption of USB drives and external disks) and Hyper-V (virtual machines) are reserved for Pro and higher editions. Windows 11 Pro also includes Remote Desktop, domain join and Group Policy. It suits anyone who wants to encrypt their drives, use virtual machines or access their PC remotely.
“Lifetime · Activation key” option: you receive a 25-character product key by e-mail. You enter it under Settings > System > Activation by choosing to change the product key. If the PC runs Windows 11 Home, the same step upgrades it to Windows 11 Pro, as Microsoft states.
System requirements according to Microsoft: compatible 64-bit processor at 1 GHz or faster with two or more cores, 4 GB of memory, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, a graphics card compatible with DirectX 12 (WDDM 2.0 driver) and an HD (720p) display larger than 9 inches. For personal use, the first setup requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account. Windows 11 Pro is available in several languages, including French and German.
The key does not make a PC that fails these requirements compatible, and it includes neither Office nor Microsoft 365. The product is also compatible with Windows 10, which Microsoft has, however, not supported since 14 October 2025.
Installation and activation
This guide activates Windows 11 Professional with your key. Is your PC on Windows Home, as it often is? Then do step 2 first: it switches the PC to Windows Professional.
Before you start
Your licence key arrives by e-mail: 25 characters, in five groups of five.
A 25-character key, for one PC. Check your PC's edition in Start → Settings → System → Activation: it shows at the top.
- Windows Home: do step 2, then step 3.
- Windows Professional: go straight to step 3.
If your PC runs Windows Home: switch to Windows Pro
Important: disconnect the Internet completely before you start (Ethernet cable unplugged, Wi-Fi off, airplane mode on).
Open the Command Prompt as administrator: right-click Start, then Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin).
Run the following commands one by one:
slmgr /upkslmgr /cpkyslmgr /ckms
Then run the final command:
changepk.exe /ProductKey VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T
Let the PC restart (5 to 20 minutes). After the restart it runs Windows Professional, not yet activated: that is normal.
Activate Windows with your key
- Reconnect the Internet.
- Go to Settings → System → Activation (or Update & Security → Activation).
- Click Change product key.
- Enter the licence key you bought.
- Windows activates automatically ✔️
If something goes wrong
If Windows does not switch to Pro, it usually means an internal Windows problem (system files missing or not installed correctly). In that case, extra steps are needed.
